અથ દ્વાદશસ્સર્ગઃ

શ્લો|| સ તસ્ય મધ્યે ભવનસ્ય મારુતિઃ લતાગૃહંશ્ચિત્રગૃહાન્ નિશાગૃહાન્|
જગામ સીતાં પ્રતિદર્શનોત્સુકો ન ચૈવ તાં પશ્યતિ ચારુદર્શનામ્||1||

સ|| સઃ મારુતિઃ તસ્ય ભવનસ્ય મધ્યે સીતાં પ્રતિ દર્શનોત્સુકઃ લતા ગૃહાન્ ચિત્રગૃહાન્ નિશાગૃહાન્ જગામ| ચારુદર્શનામ્ તાં ન પશ્યતિ એવ ||

That Maruti anxious to see Sita, then went to the houses of creepers, picture galleries, night places in the middle of that palace complex. But he could not find the beautiful lady Sita.

શ્લો|| સ ચિન્તયામાસ તતો મહાકપિઃ પ્રિયામપશ્યન્ રઘુનન્દનસ્ય તામ્|
ધ્રુવં હિ સીતા મ્રિયતે યથા નમે વિચિન્વતોદર્શન મેતિ મૈથિલી||2||
સા રાક્ષસાનાં પ્રવરેણ જાનકી સ્વશીલસંરક્ષણ તત્પરા સતી|
અનેન નૂનં પ્રતિ દુષ્ટ કર્મણા હતા ભવેત્ આર્યપથે પરે સ્થિતા||3||
વિરૂપ રૂપા વિકૃતા વિવર્ચસો મહાનના દીર્ઘવિરૂપ દર્શનાઃ|
સમીક્ષ્ય સા રાક્ષસરાજયોષિતો ભયાદ્વિનષ્ટા જનકેશ્વરાત્મજા||4||

સ|| તતઃ મહાકપિઃ રઘુનન્દનસ્ય પ્રિયામ્ તામ્ અપસ્યન્ ચિંતયામાસ | મૈથિલી વિચિન્વતઃ મે યથા દર્શનમ્ ન ઉપૈતિ સીતા ધ્રુવમ્ મ્રિયતે|| સા જાનકી પરે આર્યપથે સ્થિતા સ્વશીલસંરક્ષણતત્પરા સતી પ્રતિ દુષ્ટકર્મણા અનેન રાક્ષસાનાં પ્રવરેણ હતા ભવેત્ નૂનં|| સા જનકેશ્વરાત્મજા ભયાત્ વિરૂપરૂપાઃ વિકૃતાઃ વિવર્ચસઃ મહાનનાઃ દીર્ઘવિરૂપ દર્શનાઃ રાક્ષસરાજ યોષિતઃ સમીક્ષ્ય વિનષ્ટા||

Then the great Vanara unable to see Sita, the beloved of Rama, started thinking. "While searching for Mythili I am unable to find her. She might surey be dead. That Janaki, the follower of noble path, who wishes to protect her chastity surely must have been killed by the evil minded king of Rakshasas. That daughter of king Janaka, looking at the ugly distorted dull women with huge faces, and the tall and deformed women of the Rakshasa King, may have died out of fear."

શ્લો|| સીતાં અદૃષ્ટ્વાહ્યનવાપ્ય પૌરુષમ્ વિહૃત્ય કાલં સહ વાનરૈશ્ચિરમ્|
ન મેઽસ્તિ સુગ્રીવ સમીપગા ગતિઃ સુતીક્ષ્ણ દણ્ડો બલવાંશ્ચ વાનરઃ||5||

સ|| સીતાં અદૃષ્ટ્વા પૌરુષં અનવાપ્ય વાનરૈઃ સહ ચિરં કાલં વિહૃત્ય સુગ્રીવ સમીપગા ગતિઃ નાસ્તિ | વાનરઃ (સુગ્રીવઃ) સુતીક્ષ્ણદણ્ડઃ બલવાંશ્ચ||

Without seeing Sita , searching for whom is the pride of achievment, having passed the time limit, it is not possible to go to Sugriva. That Sugriva punishes severely and is powerful.

શ્લો|| દૃષ્ટમંતઃ પુરં સર્વં દૃષ્ટ્વા રાવણયોષિતાઃ |
ન સીતા દૃશ્યતે સાધ્વી વૃથાજાતો મમ શ્રમઃ||6||
કિં નુ માં વાનરાસ્સર્વે ગતં વક્ષ્યંતિ સંગતાઃ|
ગત્વા તત્ર ત્વયા વીર કિં કૃતં તદ્વદસ્ય નઃ ||7||

સ|| સર્વં અંતઃ પુરં દૃષ્ટં| રાવણયોષિતાઃ દૃષ્ટા| સાધ્વી સીતા નદૃશ્યતે|મમ શ્રમઃ વૃથા જાતઃ|| ગતં માં સંગતાઃ સર્વે વાનરાઃ કિં નુ વક્ષ્યંતિ |વીર તત્ર ગત્વા ત્વયા કિં કૃતં | તત્ નઃ વદસ્વ||

All the harem has been seen. All the Ravana women were seen. The pious Sita is not seen. My effort has gone waste. Once I go back what will the Vanaras say ? 'Valiant one ! what have you done after going there? That you tell us.'

શ્લો|| અદૃષ્ટ્વા કિં પ્રવક્ષ્યામિ તાં અહં જનકાત્મજામ્|
ધ્રુવં પ્રાયમુપૈષ્યંતિ કાલસ્ય વ્યતિવર્તને||8||
કિં વા વક્ષ્યતિ વૃદ્ધશ્ચ જાંબવાન્ અઙ્ગદશ્ચ સઃ|
ગતં પારં સમુદ્રસ્ય વાનરાશ્ચ સમાગતાઃ||9||

સ|| કાલસ્ય વ્યતિવર્તને તાં જનકાત્મજાં અદૃષ્ટ્વા કિં પ્રવક્ષ્યામિ | ધૃવં પ્રાયં ઉપૈષ્યંતિ|| સમુદ્રસ્ય પારં ગતં વૃદ્ધઃ જામ્બવાન્ કિં વા વક્ષ્યતિ | સઃ અઙ્ગદઃ ચ | સમાગતઃ વાનરાશ્ચ|

Having exceeded the time limit and not having seen the daughter of Janaka what can I say? They will surely sit and wait unto death. Once I cross the sea what will the elder Jambavan say. What will Angada and other Vanaras who gather say.

શ્લો|| અનિર્વેદઃ શ્રિયોમૂલં અનિર્વેદઃ પરં સુખમ્|
અનિર્વેદો હિ સતતં સર્વાર્થેષુ પ્રવર્તકઃ||10||
કરોતિસફલં જંતોઃ કર્મ યત્ તત્ કરોતિ સઃ|
તસ્માત્ અનિર્વેદકૃતં યત્નં ચેષ્ટેઽહમુત્તમમ્||11||
ભૂયસ્તાવત્ વિચેષ્યામિ દેશાન્ રાવણપાલિતાન્|

સ|| અનિર્વેદઃ શ્રિયઃ મૂલં અનિર્વેદઃ પરં સુખં અનિર્વેદઃ સતતામ્ સર્વાર્થેષુ પ્રવર્તકઃ હિ ||યત્ કર્મ કરોતિ જંતોઃ તત્ સફલં કરોતિ સઃ| તસ્માત્ અહં અનિર્વેદકૃતં ઉત્તમમ્ પ્રયત્નં ચેષ્ટે | અદૃષ્ટવાન્ રાવણપાલિતાન્ દેશાન્ વિચેષ્ટામિ તાવત્||

Being free from despair is the cause of prosperity. Being free from despair leads to ultimate happiness and leads to achieving all objectives. The effort of living beings always bears fruit. Therefore without despairing I will renew my efforts. I will look at all places not seen in this country ruled by Ravana.

શ્લો|| અપાનશાલા વિચિતાઃ તથા પુષ્પગૃહાણિ ચ||12||
ચિત્રશાલાશ્ચ વિચિતા ભૂયઃ ક્રીડા ગૃહાણિ ચ|
નિષ્કુટાન્તર રથ્યાશ્ચ વિમાનાનિ ચ સર્વશઃ||13||

સ||પાનશાલાઃ વિચિતાઃ |તથા પુષ્ફગૃહાણિ ચ | ચિત્રશાલાશ્ચ વિચિતાઃ |ભૂયઃ ક્રીડાગૃહાણિ ચ|નિષ્કુટાન્તર રથ્યાશ્ચ| વિમાનાનિ ચ| સર્વશઃ||

The drinking places are visited. The garden houses too. The picture galleries too. Again all the play houses too. The paths through the gardens and mansions were searched. Everywhere including the chariot Pushpaka were searched.

શ્લો|| ઇતિ સંચિત્ય ભૂયોઽપિ વિચેતુ મુપચક્રમે|
ભૂમિગૃહાં શ્ચૈત્ય ગૃહાન્ ગૃહાતિગૃહકાનપિ||14||
ઉત્પતન્ નિષ્પતં શ્ચાપિ તિષ્ઠન્ ગચ્ચન્ પુનઃ પુનઃ|
અપાવૃણ્વંશ્ચ દ્વારાણિ કવાટાન્યવઘાટયન્||15||
પ્રવિશન્ નિષ્પતં શ્ચાપિ પ્રપતન્ ઉત્પતતન્ અપિ|
સર્વમપ્યવકાશં સ વિચચાર મહાકપિઃ||16||

સ|| ઇતિ સંચિત્ય ભૂમિ ગૃહાન્ ચૈત્ય ગૃહાન્ ગૃહાતિગૃહકાનપિ ભૂયઃ અપિ વિચેતું ઉપચક્રમે||સઃ મહાકપિઃ પુનઃ પુનઃ ઉત્પતન્ નિષ્પતંશ્ચાપિ તિષ્ઠન્ ગચ્છન્ દ્વારાણિ અપાવૃણ્વન્ કવાટાનિ અવઘાટયન્ પ્રવિશન્ નિષ્પતંશ્ચાપિ પ્રપતન્ ઉત્પતન્નપિ સર્વં અપિ અવકાશમ્ વિચચાર||

Having thought as above he again started searching the underground houses, temples, the houses within houses The great Vanara searched again going up and down, stopping for some time and moving, opening and closing doors by crossing, entering, and exiting , jumping up and down. He searched wherever there was scope for search.

શ્લો|| ચતુરઙ્ગુળમાત્રોsપિ નાવકાશઃ સવિદ્યતે|
રાવણાન્તઃપુરે તસ્મિન્ યં કપિર્નજગામ સઃ||17||
પ્રાકારાન્તરરથ્યાશ્ચ વેદિકાશ્ચૈત્ય સંશ્રયાઃ|
દીર્ઘિકાઃ પુષ્કરિણ્યશ્ચ સર્વં તેનાવલોકિતમ્||18||

સ|| તસ્મિન્ રાવણાંતઃ પુરે સ કપિઃ યમ્ ન જગામ સઃ અવકાશઃ ચતુરંગુળમાતઃ અપિ ન વિદ્યતે| પ્રાકારાન્તરરથ્યાશ્ચ ચૈત્યસંશ્રયાઃ વેદિકાઃ દીર્ઘિકાઃ પુષ્કરિણશ્ચ સર્વમ્ તેન અવલોકિતમ્||

In that inner palaces of Ravana's harem he did not leave space of even four fingers. He went through the lanes inside the boundaries, around the temples, the pandals, the wells and ponds. He searched all of them.

શ્લો|| રાક્ષસ્યો વિવિધાકારા વિરૂપા વિકૃતાસ્તથા|
દૃષ્ટા હનુમતા તત્ર નતુ સા જનકાત્મજા ||19||
રૂપેણા પ્રતિમા લોકે વરા વિધ્યાધરસ્ત્રિયઃ|
દૃષ્ટા હનુમતા તત્ર નતુ રાઘવનન્દિની||20||

સ|| તત્ર હનુમતા વિવિધાકારાઃ વિકૃતાઃ વિરૂપાઃ રાક્ષસ્યઃ દૃષ્ટા | સા જનકાત્મજા ન તુ|| હનુમતા તત્ર લોકે રૂપેણ અપ્રતિમા વરાઃ વિધ્યાધરસ્ત્રિયઃ દૃષ્ટા| ન તુ રાઘવનન્દિની|

There Hanuman saw Rakshasas of different types ugly and deformed. But he did not see the daughter of Janaka. Hanuman saw Vidhyadhara women who are of matcheless beauty . But he did not see the daughter of Janaka.

શ્લો|| નાગકન્યા વરારોહાઃ પૂર્ણચન્દ્રનિભાનનાઃ|
દૃષ્ટા હનુમતા તત્ર ન તુ સીતા સુમધ્યમા||21||
પ્રમધ્ય રાક્ષસેન્દ્રેણ દેવકન્યા બલાદ્દૃતાઃ|
દૃષ્ટા હનુમતા તત્ર નતુ સા જનકનન્દિની||22||

સ|| હનુમતા તત્ર વરારોહાઃ નાગકન્યાઃ પૂર્ણચંદ્ર નિભાનનાઃ દૃષ્ટા| ન તુ સુમધ્યમા સીતા|| રાક્ષસેંદ્રેણ પ્રમથ્ય બલાત્ હૃતાઃ નાગકન્યાઃ તત્ર હનુમતા દૃષ્ટા| ન તુ સા જનકનંદિની||

Hanuman saw Naga women with moon like faces , but he did not see Sita with slender waist. Hanuman saw the Naga women forcibly taken away after defeating them. But not Sita.

શ્લો|| સોઽપશ્યં સ્તાં મહાબાહુઃ પશ્યંશ્ચાન્યા વરસ્ત્રિયઃ|
વિષસાદ મુહુર્થીમાન્ હનુમાન્મારુતાત્મજઃ||23||
ઉદ્યોગં વાનરેન્દ્રાણાં પ્લવનં સાગરસ્ય ચ|
વ્યર્થં વીક્ષ્યાનિલસુતઃ ચિન્તાં પુનરુપાગમત્||24||

સ|| મહાબાહુઃ ધીમાન્ મારુતાત્મજઃ સઃ હનુમાન્ તામ્ ( સીતાં ) અપશ્યન્ અન્યાઃ વરસ્ત્રિયઃ પશ્યન્ મુહુઃ વિષસાદ|| અનિલસુતઃ તાં વીક્ષ્ય વાનરેંદ્રાણામ્ ઉદ્યોગમ્ સાગરસ્ય ચ પ્લવનં ચ વ્યર્થમ્ (ઇતિ ચિન્તયામાસ)| સઃ પુનઃ ચિન્તામ્ ઉપાગમત્||

Hanuman, the great armed Vanara, not being able to see Sita while seeing other great women was again despondent. Looking at them, the son of wind god felt that the effort of crossing the sea is wasted. Again he started to brood.

શ્લો|| અવતીર્ય વિમાનાચ્ચ હનુમાન્ મારુતાત્મજઃ |
ચિંતામુપજગામાથ શોકોપહતચેતનઃ||25||

સ|| અથ મારુતાત્મજઃ હનુમાન્ વિમાનાત્ અવતીર્ય શોકોપહતચેતનઃ ચિંતાં ઉપજગામ||

Then with a mind stricken with grief, the Hanuman got down from the chariot and started to think.

ઇત્યાર્ષે શ્રીમદ્રામાયણે આદિકાવ્યે વાલ્મીકીયે
ચતુર્વિંશત્ સહસ્રિકાયાં સંહિતાયામ્
શ્રીમત્સુન્દરકાણ્ડે દ્વાદશસ્સર્ગઃ||

Thus the twelfth Sarga of Sundarakanda in Valmiki Ramayan comes to an end
